my photos of the 60 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC during
the celebration in Canberra, and a short history of the various airforces .

AIR FORCE HISTORY




US Air Force

The United States Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the US armed forces. It was formed on the 18th of September 1947 and is the most recent of the military to be formed. It consists of 327,452 personnell who are on active duty while 171,313 are civilian personnel. The airforce has over 5,778 commissioned aircraft, 2,123 of which are fighters.Some of the various aircraft include; ground attack, bombers, cargo transport, fighters and reconnaissance.Home - MILITARY AIRCRAFT Conflicts include ; WW I & II, the Korean & Vietnam wars, the Persian gulf war and the NATO bombing of Serbia Yugoslavia. There are 2 airial display teams.The Thunderbirds of the airforce & the Blue Angels of the Navy.







Australian Air Force

The Royal Australian Air Force ( RAAF ) was founded on the 13th of March and is the second oldest airforce in the world. It has 15,430 personnel and 284 aicraft (206). It has taken part in many conflicts including both World Wars as well as the Korean and VIetnam wars. The most recent being the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Some of the aircraft include the FA-18 Hornet, F-111, the Hurcules, Lockheed Hudson, AP -3 Orion and the DHC-4 Caribou. There are also the aerobatic display team the RAAF roundelRouletts. The ROULETTS were formed in 1970 to celebrate the RAAF'S 50 anniversary.They consist of seven pilots and have been together ever since. They are painted in bold red and white.






British Air Force

THE BRITISH AIR FORCE is known as the Royal Air Force( RAF) and is the oldest in the world. It was formed on the 1st of April 1918. It has taken a significant role in British military history, playing a large part in WW II. There are 41,440 personnel and roughly 1,100 aircraft of which the majority are based in the UK. Aircraft include the Eurofighter Typhoon, Harrier and spitfire as fighters, the Hercules and The RAF roundelGlobemaster as transport and the Avro Vulcan and Lincoln as bombers. Some of the helicopters are the Merlin,Chinook and Puma which are support Helicopters and the Sea King which is used for search and rescue. The airforce also has an aerial display team known as the Red Arrows.



French Air Force

THE FRENCH AIR FORCE was formed in 1909 and is the oldest military airforce in the world. It consists of 65,000 personnel and 560+ aircraft. The aircraft include the Dassult Mirages, Dassult Rafale as attack and fighters with the Dassult Falcon, C-160 Transall and the airbuses for transport. They also have helicopters such as the Eurocopter Cougers and Tigers, the Gazelles and the Pumas. There is also the Alfa Jets aerobatics display team.




German Air Force ( Luftwaffe

THE GERMAN AIR FORCE OR THE LUFTWAFFE as it is known,consists of the Wehrmacht,1935-45 and the Bundeswehr, 1956 to present. The German Army Air Service was founded in 1910. The Air Defence Force consists of 60,300 including 15,000 reserve forces and has 426 aircraft. Some of the engagements include WW II, the Spanish Civil War, Kosovo war and the war in Afghanistan. Some of the aircraft are the MesserschittRoundel of the German Air Force
aircraft that include the fighters, bombers and transport as well as the Junkers Ju 87 bomber, the Dornier bomber,
the attack / reconnaissance Tornado, Transall C-160 transport and most recently the Typhoon Eurofighter which was introduced in 2006.




The Soviet Air Force

The Russian airforce is the second or third largest in the world, depending if the aircraft or personnel are compared to the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force. It consists of 210,000 personnel and some 2,928 aircraft. Air Forces of Russia: Russian Empire(1909-1917), Soviet Red Air Force (1918-1991) The Russian Federation (1991-present). Aircraft include the Mig-29,35 fighters, Sukhoi Su - 30,35 fighters, the Sukhoi - 24,34 bombers, and theTupolev bombers as well as the Antonov and the Ilyushin for transport. Helicopters include the Kamov - 50,52 (attack), Mi Mi - 24,28 (attack), Mi Mi - 8,26 (transport), and the Kamov - 60 (transport). They also have the Falcons aerobatics team.
